The battle of the comedy titans turned out to be no battle at all. It was more like a slaughter.
Mike Myers’ comedy “The Love Guru” missed it by thaaaaaaat much, coming in a distant fourth to Steve Carell’s “Get Smart,” which ruled the weekend box office with a take of $39.1 million.
“The Love Guru,” receiving scathing reviews, did not attract much of an audience, cashing in only $14 million. Industry analysts say the movie’s audience was comprised mostly of young males who enjoy mindless, juvenile humor.
“Get Smart,” starring Carell as Maxwell Smart and Anne Hathaway at Agent 99, is an updated and pumped-up (lots more action) take on the 1960s TV spy spoof created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. The series starred Don Adams (pictured above) and Barbara Feldon.
Coming in second over the weekend was “Kung Fu Panda” with $21.7 million. Jack Black’s animated turn has collected more than $155 million so far.
In third place was “The Incredible Hulk” at $21.5 million, for a grand total of $96.4 million.
M. Night Shyamalan’s R-rated creep-fest “The Happening” scared up another $10 million for a $50 million total.
Rounding out the top 10 were:
6. “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” - $8.4 million ($290 million total)
7. “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” - $7.2 million ($84 million).
8. “Sex and the City” - $6.4 million ($132 million).
9. “Iron Man” - $4 million ($304 million).
10. “The Strangers” - $2 million ($49 million).
