There is a widely held assumption among people who are not movie stars that movie stars are full of themselves.
Perhaps Jason Segel will be full of himself one day, but that day hasn’t come yet.
Segel, who is shown here with “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” co-star Jonah Hill, is the writer and star of that movie, which many critics are hailing as the funniest movie of the year. I agree with that conclusion, although I feel obliged to point out that the year is less than four months old.
I was enjoying a recent happy hour with Segel on the outdoor patio of the legendary Chateau Marmont hotel at the mouth of the Sunset Strip.
Segel is so friendly, and so real, that he almost comes off goofy. But in a really good way. After the second round of drinks arrived, we started discussing the great reviews his movie was getting in advance of today’s opening.
In particular, he said he was blown away by Richard Roeper’s over-the-top review, in which the newspaper columnist/movie critic/movie-ad-quote-slut declared “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” an “instant classic” and “one of the funniest movies of the decade.” And then Roeper gets real complimentary.
“The review was so good that even I disagreed with it,” Segel said with a laugh.
The actor also mentioned a very positive review in Rolling Stone magazine.
“What they both said essentially was that I did a good job,” Segel said with true humility. “That really means a lot to me.
“My biggest fear as we approached the opening was that all the reviews would say something like: ‘The cast is superb, but it’s obvious that Jason Segel is unable to carry a movie.’
“Anything short of that is great.”

Hi! I watch the television show he is on all the time and he is just the cutest. I wonder if he is like that in real life. I can’t wait to see this movie. you sure make it sound so boss. Is this alright for a comment?
Greetings Mr. Koltnow,
I must say that I am appalled by the information in this post.
I knew we had a border problem with Mexico but I had no idea how bad it had gotten in Hollywood.
When a decent, friendly and humble man can just walk into town and not only write but star in successful movie is beyond belief.
Doesn’t this Segel guy realize he is taking jobs away from the aloof and shallow glitterati that so richly deserve them.
This is to say nothing of our blind adulation. Does he seriously expect us to turn our attention from Britney, Paris and Lidsey for no better reason that that he has actual talent and drive.
I am standing here beside myself.
The government should attack this problem with the same swift action they take on other serious issues.
That should grant Mr. Segel a long long career.
Thank you for the info on Jason Segel. It is really great to see the good guy get some accolades in the city of glass houses.
Just a thought…
Papa Bob
I hope this is a nice fun movie with some intelligent humor. I so need one of those to make me smile. Some of the so called comedies lately seem to made with an audience approval before it is released. These directors along with producers and actors should be talented enough to make a good movie. Maybe I am wrong, I guess the money people don’t really trust anyone with their money unless they get enough support behind them to say yes this is a good movie and yes you made a wise investment. Here is hoping to a smart fun movie not dumbed down for a general audience. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
