When you hear a rumor in Hollywood, you have two options. The first is to ignore your journalistic instincts and just pass it on. Spreading unsubstantiated rumors in Hollywood has risen to the level of a sport.
The second option is to check with the source to see if the rumor is true.
I’m for spreading unsubstantiated rumors as much as the next guy, but I had an opportunity to confirm a rumor this week, and I took it.
The rumor is that Michael Douglas is preparing a sequel to his 1984 hit “Romancing the Stone.” The romantic adventure film already had one sequel called “The Jewel of the Nile,” and the rumor was that Douglas was making a second sequel called “Racing the Monsoon.”
I met with Douglas earlier this week and found out that he is developing a film called “Racing the Monsoon,” but it’s not a sequel. However, it will be a film in “the tone” of “Romancing the Stone.”
Douglas said he already has seen, and liked, a second draft of the script, and is confident that the film will be made.
This one will not have Kathleen Turner. Instead, Douglas’ gorgeous wife Catherine Zeta-Jones will star opposite an unnamed young male actor (Catherine is 25 years younger than Douglas) and her real-life hubby will play the villain.
Douglas, 62, admits that the film is just an excuse for the couple to work together, and take their two small children with them. Your family goes to Disneyland; Michael Douglas’ family goes to India to shoot a film.
The rich really are different.
